Master Planning and YOU!

Master Planning is a term I’d never heard of before the asphalt plant tried to set up shop in our neighborhood, but it’s one of the biggest reasons our community had a leg to stand on in fighting against it.

It’s important to understand what Master Planning is, how it impacts you, the process, and how to fully engage.

WHAT IS MASTER PLANNING AND HOW IT IMPACTS YOU

A community’s Master Plan is a cornerstone document that represents the vision of the people for what they want their community to be. Topics such as commercial and residential development, parks and recreation, roads and traffic, and natural resource protections are just a few of the areas a Master Plan addresses. In short, if you don’t want to live next to a strip mall or an asphalt plant, if you aim to keep Tyrone Township the rural pristine bedroom community that it is, engaging and sharing your vision for the future of our community through the Master Planning process is imperative.

We call the Master Plan a “cornerstone document” because our Township ordinances should align and are built from the Master Plan. The Master Plan is the voice and vision of the people. The ordinances are the laws that protect our community and shape it to reflect the Master Plan. For these reasons, your feedback and participation are so incredibly valuable.

THE PROCESS

Our Planning Commission is seeking your input through a couple different avenues, a survey and upcoming visioning sessions.

First, the Township has sent out a survey that can be accessed online or on paper. A postcard should have come to your home with further details. You can now access the link to the survey from the Township website home page. When you click on the survey link, use the “NEXT” button to fill it out online. You’ll need an ID number to access it. If you haven’t received yours just yet, don’t have your ID, or need help, please go the extra mile, and call the planning and zoning department at (810) 629-8631 for assistance.

Second, you might be wondering what is a “visioning session”? A visioning session is a workshop style meeting in which residents are invited in to participate and give feedback as the Master Plan is being drafted. Often there are drawings that illustrate different options and conversations that focus on a particular area of the Master Plan in which residents can share their vision. To put it bluntly, don’t be short sighted, do everything possible to get to the visioning sessions and participate. Each one focuses on different aspects of the Master Plan, so you’ll want to be sure to try to attend as many as possible.
